Aim: to understand that our salvation results in joy, even in the midst of suffering
Introduction/Context: In Luke 15, there is a series of memorable parables presented by Jesus – the story of the lost sheep (vs. 4-7), the lost coin (vs. 8-10), and the lost (prodigal) son (vs. 11-32). Each parable represents salvation, portraying a lost soul – being found, forgiven by God, and reconciled to God. What is at the end of each parable? A celebration. A celebration of joy at the recovery of that which was lost, illustrating heaven’s response, as well as the response of the family of God, to the salvation of a sinner. Thus, it is not a stretch to say, from Jesus’ standpoint, a part of His message within those parables is that true salvation and true joy are a part of each other. And what Peter is attempting to do here in this letter, is to have us understand that joy should be our constant companion, our constant expression, our constant illumination as the result of our eternal salvation.
