Lesson 2
Psalms 42-43

A Psalm of Lament

Psalms of Lament express the inner struggle of a nation or person.

In keeping with our series title, “Rhythms of Thinking and Feeling,” psalms of lament express the feelings of an individual or entire nation. The expression of feelings is refreshing for us to read and study. We experience similar situations in life. We experience feelings of depression and despair that lead us to cry out to God. We find ourselves questioning the purpose of God in some circumstances. One of the things that the psalms of lament can teach us is the appropriate way to cry out to God. These psalms present a relationship with God that feels troubled, distant, hurt, and even abandoned. One the other hand, each psalm of lament provides an ultimate hope that surpasses momentary feelings. A turning back to God in trust and thanksgiving is a consistent theme throughout psalms of lament.
