Download this week's devotionalPsalm 45 was composed as a song for the occasion of a royal wedding. It evokes all the sights, sounds, movement, splendor, and emotion of such an important occasion. Because of the theological significance of the wedding, and the function of the Davidic king within God’s order of life within Israel and Judah, this wedding song becomes a “type”—a Scriptural example that provides illustrative information to us. In this case, as it is a Messianic psalm it provides information regarding Christ Himself and His bride, the church. At the same time, it was possibly written for and applicable to any descendant of David, as it extols the privileged position of God’s people and also sets forth His expectations of them, as well as those of His representative ruler, be it a human king, or a future Messiah.
